Setting the Sustainability Record Straight

MYTH: Some plastic films are curbside recyclable.
FACT: No plastic films, packaging or otherwise, are curbside recyclable.

MYTH: Oxo-additives (aka bio-additives) used in plastics will allow for the material to biodegrade.
FACT: Oxo-additives have not been scientifically proven to speed up biodegradability of plastics.

MYTH: Curbside recyclability is the best measure of sustainability.
FACT: The end-of-life for a material is only a small part of its sustainability profile.

MYTH: If a product has this symbol , that means it’s recyclable.
FACT: That is a resin identification code(RIC) and is not an indicator of recyclability. It communicates what type of plastic was used to create the product.

MYTH: Paper is the most sustainable option.
FACT: While paper is recyclable, there are other sustainability factors that must be considered such as damage rate, package weight and cube size.

A product damaged in transit can more than double its environmental impact.

The environmental impact of the product itself is typically 500x the impact of the packaging materials used to protect it.

The shipping cycle accounts for just 2% of a product’s environmental impact.
